National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) of the College is headed by Rev. Dr. J. Angelo, SDB, Principal. It is comprised of two Programme Officers, Mr. P. Palanisamy, Assistant Professor of Tamil for Unit I, and Mr. R. Sagayam, Assistant Professor of Computer Science for Unit II, and students as the registered volunteers. The NSS emphasizes that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependant on the welfare of the society as a whole.

Abiding by the motto, “Not me but you,” the NSS volunteers enthusiastically participate in the activities. Youth acquire leadership qualities and experience to work at different community levels.

Since the establishment of the College in 2007, the NSS unit has been functioning with full vigour and enthusiasm. It aims at inculcating amongst the volunteers a spirit of team-work, service to the community they live in, character building which ultimately leads to the development of their personality. This deepens understanding of the social environment and enriches his/her personality through actual participation in day-to-day life of the society. This process of learning is not only a desirable supplement to the classroom education but develops in the student a sense of responsibility, tolerance and cooperation. The NSS plays a vital role in the development of the latent aspects of the student's personality.

National Service Scheme (NSS) in Don Bosco College, helps students to understand the community in which they work, understand themselves in relation to their community, identify the needs and problems of the community. The students develop a sense of social and civic responsibility which helps them gain competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities. They also develop skills in mobilizing community participation and acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.

Objectives

1. General Objectives

  • To understand the community in which they work;

  • To understand themselves in relation to their community;

  • To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving. process;

  • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;

  • To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;

  • To develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities;

  • To gain skills in mobilizing community participation;

  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;

  • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and

  • To practice national integration and social harmony.

2. Specific Objectives

  • To arouse a social consciousness of the students by providing them opportunities to work with and among the people.

  • To develop an awareness and knowledge of social realities to have concern for the well-being of the community and engage in creative and constructive social action.

  • To provide with rich and meaningful educational experiences to them in order to make their education complete and meaningful.

  • To develop the skills needed in the exercise of democratic leadership and programme development to help them get self-employed.

  • To give them the opportunities for their personality development.

Activities

  • Blood detection camps, blood donation, etc.

  • Eye camp

  • Campus cleaning

  • Celebration of important days

  • Orientation camps

  • Participation of students in various seminars conducted all over the state

  • Various cultural activities aiming at personality development of students
